How to explain orbits to a child (without saying “zero gravity”)

A short guide for parents and teachers: the analogies that work, the ones that quietly cause problems later, and the order to introduce them in.

Orbits are the point where space stops being a picture book subject and becomes physics. Get the explanation right early and a great deal downstream becomes easier. Get it wrong and children spend years believing something they will have to actively unlearn.

Start with throwing, not with space

Do not begin with rockets or planets. Begin with a ball. Throw it gently — it lands nearby. Throw it harder — it lands further away. Ask what would happen if you could throw it hard enough.

Children almost always get there themselves: eventually it would go all the way round. That is the whole concept, and they worked it out. Everything afterwards is detail.

Then name it

An orbit is falling around something instead of into it. The satellite is falling the entire time. It simply keeps missing, because it is also moving sideways very fast.

The phrase worth repeating is “falling and missing”. It is short, it is accurate, and it does not need replacing later.

Three analogies that work

Two that cause problems

“There is no gravity in space.” This is the big one. Gravity at the space station is still about 88% as strong as it is on the ground. If a child believes gravity is absent, they have no way to explain what holds the Moon in place.

“Space is very far away.” It is about 100 km straight up, which is closer than most families live to the nearest big city. Framing space as unreachably distant hides the real difficulty, which is not the height but the sideways speed — about 27,600 km per hour.

An order that tends to work

When they ask why it does not slow down

A good question and worth answering rather than deflecting. There is almost nothing up there to rub against, so almost nothing slows it down. “Almost” is doing real work: the space station does meet a few stray molecules and does slowly lose height, which is why it is boosted back up from time to time.

That answer has the useful property of being both true and unfinished, which tends to be where the good questions come from.
