Why is the sky blue but space is black?

The sky is not blue because of anything blue. It is blue because air scatters short wavelengths in every direction — and where there is no air, there is nothing to scatter.

Astronauts on the space station see a black sky studded with stars and a bright blue Earth beneath them. Same Sun, same daytime, completely different sky. The reason is that the blue was never in the sky — it was in the air.

Sunlight is not yellow

Sunlight looks white because it contains every colour mixed together. A prism separates them out; so does rain, which is what a rainbow is. Each colour travels as a wave, and the waves have different lengths — blue and violet short, red long.

Air scatters short waves hardest

As sunlight passes through the atmosphere it strikes molecules of nitrogen and oxygen. Those molecules bounce the light off in random directions, and — this is the key — they scatter short wavelengths far more strongly than long ones.

So blue light gets knocked around the sky, ricocheting from molecule to molecule until it arrives at your eye from every direction at once. Look anywhere except at the Sun and you are looking at scattered blue. Red light largely carries straight on past.

No air, no blue

Now take the air away. Above roughly 100 km — the Kármán line, the usual boundary of space — there is effectively nothing left to scatter light off. Sunlight travels in a straight line from the Sun to your eye and nowhere else.

So you see the Sun, blazing, and everywhere else you see straight through to the dark of space. The sky is black not because the Sun has gone but because there is nothing between you and the stars to light up.

The Moon works the same way. Photographs from the Apollo landings show a black sky in full daylight, with the surface brilliantly lit. No atmosphere, no scattering, no blue.

Which means the blue sky is not a feature of space at all. It is a feature of the thin shell of air we live at the bottom of — and it fades out as you climb, long before the rocket gets anywhere near orbit.
